All in Walking

A Pilgrim Responds to Ukraine Crisis

And I have a confession to make.

I have fallen once again into that old familiar pit. I have been focusing my psychic energy on pity for the victims on the other side of the world and forgetting that this unimaginable moment might also have something for my tragic soul as well.

So today I asked myself a simple question… What might a Pilgrim do in this tragic moment?

Penance is a Gift

On our last podcast, Kari and Tony discussed the human condition often called “Wanderlust.” Where does it come from? Is it nature or nurture? Does it come from our ego, our hope, or our need for redemption/meaning/acceptance? During the conversation, Tony made the passing comment that one of the things that compel him to wander, like walking the Camino de Santiago, is the concept of PENANCE. In today’s blog, Tony shares how penance can, surprisingly, be a gift.

Growing Old

In today’s blog, Tony has an epiphany about getting ‘unstuck’ through an encounter with one woman and her basketball. In these hard winter days, he reminds us, regardless of our age, how much we all need to find ways to play.

Embracing Limitation

On our last podcast, Kari and I were joined by Tom Stutzman, in an episode titled “Embracing the Minotaur.”

Tom opened up his life tenderly for all to hear and shared his journey both across Spain and into the fragile places inside.

One story that Tom shared was about walking the Camino de Santiago and how his trip got derailed by circumstances he could not have predicted or avoided.

Listening to those words reminded me of the fragility of any journey.

Counter-Culture Pilgrim

Who doesn’t love to be counter-cultural?  We all know that so much of the status quo is not soul feeding.  It is too often fueled by fad.  Any thoughtful person believes that our media-saturated, immediate gratification, entertainment focused, multi-tasking, tyranny-of-the-urgent society is the dietary equivalent of a Walmart candy aisle.

Beautiful Things

As Tony and I have been reflecting on walking the Camino in our latest podcast, I have been re-reading the blogs I wrote as I walked the Camino Portugués. This is one of my favorites…

This house stopped us in our tracks and even though I was exhausted and my feet were aching, I perched on a rock to quickly sketch the basic shapes in my journal. Later, when the rain poured outside my Albuerge window, I used my bunk bed to film this time lapse.

Dying

I've passed so, so many graveyards along the Camino... ...as well as all the tombs in churches and the memorials to pilgrims who died along the Camino. That's a lot of death to witness... and to process...
